Fluttery, not fake, is the key to this look

When it comes to celebrity make-up artists, there are a few secret tricks they carry in their beauty arsenal to achieve a look that works as well under the photography of the red carpet as it does in day-to-day life. Often, it's the most subtle of additions or slight of hand that can end up enhancing our features to looking their best, while maintaining a natural look.

If you've been paying particularly close attention, you might have noticed one trend that's been sweeping the A-list scene this year: winged lashes.

In a stark contrast to the heavy liner iterations of various animal-themed eyes (cat, fox etc) that were circulating on social media throughout 2021, winged-out lashes focus on enhancing the eye shape through the use of precisely placed individual lashes.

The Hadid sisters, Sophie Turner and Zoë Kravitz are just a few celebrities that have opted for this feminine yet understated eye look so far this year, often wearing it with a pared-back, lightly contoured base for an overall sculpted and lifted appearance.

"Winged lashes elongate the eye upwards and out for an almond-shaped stare," explains MAC make-up artist Mus Emin. "Play with the tilt of the eye by extending the inner corners, widening the eyes for an open, lifted look.”

The key to this look is finding the perfect set of individual lashes (in addition to a lengthening mascara). Where full lashes can often overpower your eyes, individual lashes give you the ability to control both the style of lash and placement to best complement your personal eye shape.

For the most natural look, avoid placing lashes along the inner corner of the eye. Instead, start just after halfway where your lash line begins to curve down, starting with shorter lashes and adding length as you work to the outer corner of your eye.

Play around with different lashes to find which style elongates your eyes best; round eyes may find that taking lashes right to the the outer corner will end up dragging the eye shape down, so don't be afraid to leave a bit of space at the end.

If you desire extra definition and lift, line the outer corner with a thin black liquid liner and wing slightly upwards, following the natural lash line.
