Viral video reveals why you should clean your lash extensions

A beauty technician has gone viral on TikTok for reminding viewers why they should always keep their eyelash extensions clean.

On Thursday, Ipek Ozcan, a professional lash technician from the U.K., shared a requested video tutorial to TikTok, demonstrating the proper way to clean eyelash extensions. The shockingly "gross" clip accumulated more than 4.6 million views and sparked a much-needed conversation about eyelash extension maintenance and care.

In the video, Ozcan tries to clean a client's lash extensions that have become so dirty, a crust has formed at the lash line.

“Here is a video of me cleaning these dirty lashes, well, trying to clean them anyway," Ozcan said in the video. “Once your lashes get to this point of unclean, there is no cleaning. Cleaning will not work."

Ozcan continues to clean the lashes, even though many begin to fall off.

“I am scrubbing the life out of these lashes and look at all the gunk that is still there. Scrub scrub scrub - it doesn’t work," she explained, while vigorously cleaning the "gunk" built up around the client's lash line.

Ozcan then reveals that once lashes reach this point, it's better to simply have them removed otherwise it can cause infection and damage to your natural lashes.

“It’s not worth the damage, just clean your lashes," she added.

Aside from your eyelashes not looking their best, there are real health consequences to improper eyelid hygiene.

"Blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelids, is a common and very uncomfortable condition. It can lead to puffy, red eyelids, discharge and flaking skin and sore, gritty eyes," Dr. Sarah Jarvis, a general practitioner in the U.K explained in an interview with The Sun. "While it’s rarely dangerous, it is not easy to get rid of and can take several months to settle down."

While many viewers thanked Ozcan for bringing awareness to an issue that isn't talked about enough, others were more concerned about just how dirty the lashes in the video were.

"How does someone let them get this bad?" one person asked, while another added, "I don't understand how people don't clean themselves."

"They look so infected," someone pointed out. "Throwing up."

"I got pink eye just by looking at this," another commented.

"This looks so gross," someone else wrote.

Ozcan shared a follow-up video, explaining how lash extensions get dirty in the first place — a popular question commented on the clip's precursor.

"This client is a heavy makeup wearer. Every day. And did not clean her lashes for four weeks," she revealed. "This can cause serious bacterial infections. Blepharitis is one of them. This is when there is more bacteria on the lash line than usual. It causes red, inflamed, itchy eyelids. You will also be more prone to styes and loss of your natural eyelashes," she added.
