Electric two-wheelers are one of the largest contributors to the Indian EV market, and the segment is fast-evolving and rapidly growing. While a lot of action has been seen in the EV segment, electric scooters play a major role in it. Electric scooters are practical urban commuters that have become a great choice for many buyers. 2022 has seen its fair share of electric scooters that have been launched in the market. Here are the top 5 most significant electric scooters that have entered the Indian EV two-wheeler segment this year:

Okinawa Okhi 90 is one of the more well-engineered electric scooters in India and comes with a 3.8kW motor that can propel the e-scooter to a top speed of 80 to 90kmph. The Okhi 90 is paired with a 72V 50AH Li-ion battery that can deliver a claimed range of 160km. The battery pack is also capable of fast charging. It also gets an ECO mode that limits speed to 60kmph to maximise efficiency. 

The Okinawa Okhi 90 also gets a knob-like start key along with a digital dashboard to add to its modern flare. The scooter adds practicality via a 40-litre boot space and a flat floorboard. The Okhi 90 also comes with  keyless start, music playback, turn-by-turn navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, app support, over-the-air (OTA) updates, Geo-fencing, Find My Vehicle, trip history, driver score, speeding alerts, navigation, etc. Design features include 16-inch alloy wheels,  chrome embellishments, sensor-based LED lighting systems, chunky grab rails, etc. 

Ola Electric’s S1 e-scooter was relaunched in India this year back in October. The Ola S1 is essentially a repackaged version of the more expensive Ola S1 Pro e-scooter and comes with a smaller 3kWh battery pack. Ola Electric claims that the vanilla Ola S1 returns an ARAI-certified range is 141km, 128km in Eco mode of True Range, 101km in normal mode and 90km in Sports Mode. 

The Ola S1 electric scooter is identical to the Ola S1 Pro in most aspects but comes finished in fewer shades of colour. The smaller battery also makes it 4kg lighter than the ‘Pro’ model. The scooter gets a 7-inch colour TFT display that runs on MoveOS, Ola’s proprietary vehicle control software. The system has features such as navigation, control via a companion app, music playback, reverse mode, etc. It does not get cruise control, which is reserved for the more expensive Ola S1 Pro.  

Ola Electric’s S1 Air e-scooter was introduced in India this year back in October as a budget offering from the company. The Ola S1 can be understood to be a bare-bones version of the more expensive Ola S1 series and comes with a smaller 2.5kWh battery pack which fully charges up in 4 hours and 30 minutes. The motor generates 4.5kW of peak power and can propel the scooter from 0 to 40kmph in 4.3 seconds up to a top speed of 85kmph. The Ola S1 Air can do a range of 101km on a single charge. 

Three basic riding modes are present on the vanilla Ola S1 Air electric scooter. , Eco, Normal, and Sports. The S1 Air surprisingly gets a 7-inch TFT touchscreen and gets Move OS 3.0 software. It will continue to offer features like reverse mode, hill-hold functionality, and user profiles. Some fancier mechanical items have also been switched out in favour of a more frugal setup when compared to the more expensive ‘Pro’ model. The Ola S1 gets pressed steel wheels, twin telescopic front forks and dual rear shock absorbers, drum brake setup on both ends. The e-scooter at 99kg is fairly light as well. 

The Ather 450X Gen 3 is one where a tried-and-tested machine has evolved even further. The Gen 3 has furthered the Ather 450X and the scooter now gets an upgraded 3.7kWh battery and now returns a maximum riding range of 146km as per ARAI certification. The scooter comes with five ride modes – Warp, Sport, Ride, SmartEco, and Eco. The maximum power output is unsurprisingly in the Warp mode, where it produces 8.7hp of power output.

It also packs in necessary gizmos such as a new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a 7-inch TFT display with more RAM, etc. Mechanical changes include an all-aluminium frame and a wider rear tyre that increases grip and stability. The Ather 450X continues to get onboard navigation, smartphone connectivity, ride data analytics, connected vehicle technology, etc. 

TVS iQube too got a much-needed refresh and the 2022 model that was launched has brought it up to speed with its competitors. The TVS iQube gets a 4.4kW motor that takes the scooter from a standstill to 40kmph in just 4.2 seconds. The lower variants have a limited top speed of 78kmph while the more expensive ST variant goes up to 82kmph. The e-scooter gets two riding modes, namely Economy and Power, and also gets a Q-Assist reverse mode. 

380g Packing Machine The lower variants of the TVS iQube get a 3.4kWh battery pack that enables a range of 100km while the higher spec ST variant with a larger 5.1kWh battery pack delivers about claimed 145km range. The e-scooter is capable of charging at 650W and 950W while the ST variant can be charged at up to 1.5kW. The iQube gets  a 7-inch TFT colour display, TVS SmartXonnect, Amazon Alexa connectivity, a phone charging port, 32 litres of under-seat storage, LED lighting, dual-tone alloy wheels, etc.
